Did You Know…? The Church teaches that the Blessed Virgin Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven by her divine son Jesus. Only God can rise from the dead of his own divine power, so Jesus himself ascended into heaven. But he assumed, or raised, his mother at the end of her time on earth. This teaching can be clearly seen in Saint Martin’s Ascension and Assumption murals on the inside walls of our sanctuary. While in the Ascension mural Jesus is shown rising up to heaven totally on his own, the painting of Mary’s Assumption depicts her rising up to heaven, surrounded by angels, who at Christ’s command are bringing her. Although the dogma of the Assumption wasn’t solemnly defined until Pope Pius XII did so in 1950, it has always been believed and taught by Catholic Christians since the time of the apostles – a part of the deposit of divinely-inspired Sacred Tradition that all Catholics are obliged to believe.
